Having numerous acquaintances that use statin drugs – and the fact that nearly 21 million American patients (>6% of the U.S. population) were prescribed statin drugs last year – a March 2012 article by Tara Parker-Pope on her New York Times “Well” blog seems pertinent. The article discusses a potential association between the use of statin drugs and cognitive impairment.
As with most drug advice these days, your reaction should be grounded in weighing the benefits of certain drug use against the drug’s side effects. Unfortunately many side effects are only discovered the longer the drug is in actual use in the population, long after the initial clinical trials and FDA approval have taken place. Consider Parker-Pope’s article as part of an ongoing education process regarding your health and treatment choices. As always, speak with your doctor about your individual concerns.
On a lighter note – take advantage of this early Spring. Spending time outdoors just might improve your health – and most certainly your outlook. Get out there and enjoy this day!
